The Closeness of Sisters by Emma Digerud-White

My Daughters caught in a loving and theatrical embrace “take a photo of this mummy, and paint it!” They say. And I do. It’s the first time they’ve done this. What joy.

I created this piece whilst on a week long Residencey at Truro Girls School (May 2025) I usually work from home so it was a joy to have so much space.

I smeared pushed spread dripped and painted layer upon layer of colour as I connect with my emotions and force myself to feel joy in the act. Life is too hard elsewhere, in this part I strive for Joy. Then the hard part comes the representation of my two best ever creations, on canvas. I’m in deep and do the whole thing in one all encompassing trance, I’ve no idea how long it took, but it’s done now to sit back and stare.

The layers in my work are deeply connected to my emotional energy and they way we layer ourselves as humans. So often it seems we are trying to hide parts of ourselves and bring others to the fore. It is these layers that I see, and rearrange. Do you see?
