This was our first major exhibition of works and took place at Cornwall’s hotbed for creativity - Jupiter Gallery (under Director Faye Dobinson). Myself and Penny Chivers Stanley met through the Defining Practice course at Newlyn School of Art and immediately found a synergy in our work.
Through sharing works, books and many conversations it became clear that we both felt, as individuals and as women that we were often unseen. And that this was not an uncommon feeling among our families, social groups and in wider society. We wanted to explore these observations, create discussion and show the parts of us and our subjects that we wanted to be seen, in all their raw, honest, uncompromising glory. This the show title ‘Can You See Me?’ Was born.
The show comprised of a selection of works totalling 43 pieces. These pieces included inks, painting, digital drawing, sculpture, mixed media and an interactive piece ‘The mirror’. The pieces seemed to talk very naturally to each other and were hung accordingly with the help of Gallery Director & Artist, Faye
Across the week we had so many wonderful and in-depth conversations in this beautiful space. It was a real privilege to have this show in the wonderful town of Newlyn where we met such a rich array of individuals.
Thank you to all who came and supported us on this very important step. See you at the next one!
